I'LL TAKE GARY DOER TO BLOCK, BARACK...

Look who now's playing cover for the Alberta tarsands, er oilsands project.
While I actually believe that the best strategy to deal with the oilsands and its litany of environmental implications (many to come) isn't to force it closed or halted, I find it amusing in a sick way that another NdP leader is playing defence for Stephen Harper.
Gary Doer may have a track record in Manitoba, but what he offers in tarsands pollution denials is akin to holding up a big novelty sized cheque with the SS Valdez on it and offering it to environmentalists.
I wonder how comfortable the intelligent, serious NdPers are feeling, these days?

Here's a thought. Maybe Doer isn't "playing defence" for anyone. Perhaps he actually believes in supporting the Oilsands, an example of growth and future prosperity in this country.

When the economy is on shacky ground, supporting industries and projects that put money in everyone's pockets just makes good sense.

It should be apparent that Gary's job isnt to advocate for Manitoba anymore but all of Canada instead now...

"Doer said there's no contradiction in Canada's message on climate change"

Yeah, right. Let's forge ahead with the expansion of the Tar Sands, escalating GHG, the destruction of the boreal forest and wildlife habitat, the pollution of the Athabasca watershed, the waste of precious water. At the same time let's get going on green infrastructure, renewables, energy efficiency. Maybe nobody will notice what's going on in Alberta. After all, money in your pocket is what counts, right Canadians?

I'm not completely disagreeing with Doer's meme, just wondering how this mixes with the NdP outrage at the oilsands' terrible environmental record and anyone who has offered support of the projects. It seems while Doer is taking his position seriously (altho seriously, he can't be serious when he stated there was no contradiction in Canada nee Harper's message on climate change) I dare ask how the NdP is with it. They were all over Ignatieff for his support of the tarsands, but what they missed is the fact that you can support this job creator and also support smarter, better, wiser science and technology to improve and clean up the mess.
